Ruli Women’s Coffee: Rwanda

Ruli Women’s Coffee is a gorgeous washed Red Bourbon from Rwanda. Sparkling citrus acidity plays over sweet caramel tones and stone fruit complexity. It’s the perfect blend of elegance and vibrancy.

This special lot comes from Ruli Washing station in Gakenke District, Northern Rwanda, and is made up exclusively of coffee grown by 136 women producers from the surrounding hills. Many are members of Rambagirakawa, a women’s alliance within the Dukunde Kawa cooperative. By delivering cherry to the station on set days and keeping their coffee separated as a dedicated Women’s Coffee lot, the women earn an additional bonus on top of the co-op’s quality premium, helping to fund home improvements, education and year-round income through side projects like basket weaving.

Ruli is the largest of three washing stations owned by the Dukunde Kawa Co-op and sits at around 2,000 masl, where cool temperatures and rich volcanic soils make for sweet, structured washed coffees. In addition, the site is home to the Rambagirakawa Women Alliance’s community building and the newly-built Musasa Early Childhood Development Centre – funded through MCM’s successful Supporting Strong Women campaign with support from the Aussie coffee community.

Ripe cherry is depulped, fermented, washed and dried slowly on raised beds for a clean, expressive cup.
