cafésmart 2020 is right around the corner! Locale is proud to be involved as a roaster partner again for the 6th year running & we hope to be involved for many years to come. this year marks 10 years of cafésmart – that’s a whole decade of the coffee community coming together to drink coffee, do good!
over this time, our friends at Street Smart Australia have raised over $1.4 MILLION by bringing together local cafes & coffee drinkers to take action against homelessness.
this year, cafesmart will kick off on the 12th-18th October, with the big day on friday 16th!
we know how tough 2020 has been on everyone, particularly in the hospitality industry, so this year’s event is a little bit different, with multiple ways to participate. as always, we’ll be kicking in the beans for cafes that donate!
what is cafesmart?
cafesmart is an initiative by Streetsmart Australia to unite the coffee community to take action against homelessness. Streetsmart believes everyone should have a safe and secure place to call home. they work to raise funds and awareness to bring about change for people experiencing homelessness or at risk.
through campaigns like cafesmart, they enable & empower communities to raise vital funds and awareness for smaller grassroots homeless services. donations are fed back into projects as close to where they are raised as possible and targeted smaller services aimed at people experiencing homelessness. these smaller organisations are embedded in local communities and can often deliver innovative responses to community needs.
how will cafésmart work this year?
when cafés sign up online, they can pledge to donate .50c or $1 from each coffee sold on friday 16th October, and also encourage their customers to donate across the week of 12th-18th.
the team at Streetsmart provide everything needed to create the buzz in the cafés & on social media (posters, collection box, stickers, etc).
roasters get involved too! we support the cafes by giving back 1kg of coffee for every $50 a café donates.

help your hood! be part of the biggest café event of the year & help your local community in the process. in 2019, we collectively raised $203,000 to fund 173 community grants!
the best part is, donations stay local. 100% of the proceeds are donated back to the local communities where the funds are raised, meaning you’re helping to fund community projects in your local neighbourhood.

if you’re a coffee drinker just wanting to do your bit, you can head to the café finder here to search for your closest participating café. any tips you contribute through the week will be counted towards the cafes final donation tally. and they’ll also be donating 50c or $1 from every coffee sold on friday 16th. so go out and buy a coffee (or three) to show your support!
while we don’t currently have a venue of our own to be able to get involved & sell coffees that week, we still wanted to do more. we’ll be donating 5% of organic sales throughout Aug-Oct to cafesmart.
we have mad love for our coffee community & we’re excited to come together again to support the 100,000’s of vulnerable people in Australia who’ve been hit the hardest by this pandemic.
